VOCALOID™ is a singing voice synthesis technology developped by the YAMAHA® Corporation. The technology became popular with the release of Hatsune Miku. The current version of the synthetizer was realised in 2014. It is now popular amongst both professionals and amateurs.

A song created with the aid of the VOCALOID™ software is called a Vocaloid Song.

The Technology

It’s technology is based on voice fragments it processes to generate a natural sounding signing voice. It uses the input of lyrics and melody over a timeline mimicking a music keyboard. The user can then edit various aspect of the singing voice such as breath, vibrato, tone, and more.

Voice Libraries

Voice libraries are the source of the singings the synthetizer creates. Basically, a library is sets of small recordings from an actual human voice for each phonemes of a language. Examples of popular voice banks: Miku Hatsune, GUMI, IA and VY1.

Voice banks are usually linked to a character design and a personna for maketting reasons. The most popular banks all have lovable characters linked to them. Hatsune Miku is the prime example of this trend.
